Kashmir is known internationally for its style of embroidery which is found on garments like the phiran,tapestry, curtains, shawls, and household linen. The craftsmen draw inspiration from the landscape and the embroidery is renowned for its beauty and richness. Namdas are a kind of mattress, originally from the state of Jammu and kashmir. These are made by felting the wool rather than weaving it. A low quality wool is mixed with a small quantity of cotton is used to manufacture gabba . Gabba are recycled old woolen blankets or lois that are washed milled and dyed in various colors. These pieces are then stitched together and backed with a waste cotton cloth.

The gabba is then either appliqued or embroidered with crewelwork. In the appliqued type, pieces of dyed blankets are joined together and interspersed with vividly colored embroidery in geometric and floral patterns. Although the common layout is a central medallion placed in a rectangular field that has borders, gabba is made in a variety of shapes and sizes. It is used extensively in Kashmiri households as an effective and inexpensive floor covering and is also used as a mattress in colder areas of the state.

These rugs are usually made of 65 % wool or silk yarn & 35 % of cotton yarn the base of the rug is hessian cloth in pastel colors 7 it is backed by cotton cloth on the surface Kashmiri embroidery is done the motifs are traditional Kashmiri floral patterns.

 

Kashmiri Gabba is also sometimes referred to as recycled byproducts.
Here many times artists take the old woolen blankets and then create this beautiful piece from that after washing and stitching. Cotton cloth is also used sometimes below to make it sturdy in case if it is not. The main work of artists is now can be seen as they do a lot of embroideries using woolen threads.

Gabba is generally used as carpets or even as mattresses.
For namda the wool is not weaved. Here we use cotton to get whitish color fabric wherein artists can do attractive embroidery. Namdas are generally smaller in size as compared to Gabba.
Namdas are more famous in other states of India as well as internationally.
